A grid is generally considered to be a combined set of heterogenious distributed systems, for the purposes of time sharing resources.

A particular grid arrangement may have some exceptional components such as super computers, or large clusters.

One might consider the motivation for a grid as a means to harness unused logic engine cycles over intervening network connections.

As most computers have an abundance of unused cycles this appears an attractive proposition.
